GPT Patient Highlight - Dylan Sandvick
What is your name? Dylan Sandvick
How old are you? I am 22 years old.
What sport do you participate in? Rodeo - Professional rodeo - I mostly ride bareback horses so the rough-stock event. I’ve done over 200-300 rodeos.
What injury did GPT help you recover from? I tore the labrum (The labrum is a type of cartilage found in the shoulder joint) in my right shoulder last winter, I continued to rodeo with the injury and it got worse and worse. Eventually I had to have surgery on it.
How long have you been in rodeo? Since I was 18 years old (professionally) but I’ve ridden bucking horses since I was 15. I’m following in my dad’s footsteps. His name is Larry Sandvick and they called him the “Wild Man”.
What are your athletic and/or academic goals for the future? My main goal for rodeo is to provide for my family, I’d like to reach more substantial goals, I’d like to turn it into an investment. Buy a house and have kids eventually.
Which therapists did you work with? I worked with a couple of people but I mostly did therapy with Alecia Clouston.
Are you a better athlete now than you were before you were injured? I do! I feel a lot stronger and more confident in where I was injured. It’s weird but I feel stronger than when I first started. I took the workouts from PT and do them now before a rodeo and at home. I use what they taught me every day to stay strong and prevent injury.
If so, in what ways did GPT help? They kept me motivated, they helped me keep a positive attitude, to keep looking forward. It’s a super fun atmosphere so it helped to take my mind off that I'm hurt. Instead, they helped me focus on getting back to what I love.
“If I was anyone else I would go to GPT. Everyone was super friendly, a great environment, everyone working there wants to watch you succeed and get back to what you love, they’re a good group of people to be around.”
